First off, cute place, it's a house, seating is separated in the different rooms and the back porch, so it feels like you are at a big family gathering at Aunt Susie's house. The menu is pretty standard with burgers, sandwiches and salads, and they offer a daily lunch special. This was my first time here as I was in Lexington to have my truck Linex ed and came on yelp to find a nearby place of interest for lunch. I decided to go for the fried catfish special. It was good. Had a home cooked feel to it. Nice sized fish portion, the fish was a slight mushy texture, which to me means either over or undercooked, it was plenty hot, so it may have tended on the over done side. I'm not real familiar with how catfish is supposed to be, however it tasted good, so that's the most important thing. The breading on it was perfect though, light and crispy, that made the fish. The fries were ok, nothing special. The slaw was a satisfying chopped texture versus the usual shredded type, which I liked, the sauce was a creamy mayo with not much sweetness, it was good, but I've had better. The hush puppies were good, a bit too much onion flavor, but they were smooth inside, with no bits of stuff, which I liked. Apparently they are known for desserts and ice cream, which I did not try, but the table next to me got a gooey chocolate cake that was shared by 4 ladies, there was no way I was touching that by myself, but they were all raving about it. Overall, this a is a nice place, it's not far from the airport, but it is off the beaten path a little bit, so you have to know about it to end up there.

Went to the Backyard for the first time yesterday and fell in love! We had excellent service, the blacked chicken & black and bleu salads were both delicious and the homemade ice cream was amazing! (We has Girl Scout lemon cookie & birthday cake.) They have live music weekend evenings and daily specials (a regular at the next table told me to watch out for the baked spaghetti *drool*)! Very happy to have moved in just a few blocks away- I will be here frequently!

This is our go to place when we have friends and family in town. The food is always great! Service is friendly. They are kid friendly. We are usually there once a week. Just wish they had breakfast hours!

Oh my- food was incredible...I mean...truly delicious. I had the chicken parmigiana and it was the best I have had in a long time. Service was awesome and very friendly. We are going to try the cake and ice cream special...based on other reviews. Bluegrass band playing tonight- very nice...good break from the fast pace we normally run at...

I can't say enough good things about this place. The food is Amazing! In fact, the only negative is their parking lot which can get muddy. This place is a GEM!

Amazing little restaurant! Service and food are amazing. The only bad thing I read about it was that the parking lot can get muddy but they've graveled their lot so problem solved! A great break from the fast food treadmill!!! Appetizers and home made sauces are wonderful! Even if you have to go a little out of the way, it's worth it!!!

This place felt like I was walking into someone home for lunch. The server was really nice--even the other server who wasn't taking care of us was friendly and welcoming to us. But it seemed everyone who walked in was greeted by name. It also seemed like everyone came there for their famous homemade ice cream on a daily basis. Overhead more than once was, "just give me the same thing I had yesterday..." indicating the person behind the counter knows everyone's daily go-tos. Not being from these parts by about 5,000 miles, we were introduced to a new side: wing chips; part potato chip, part french fry. The portions are big and the prices are fair. I split a salad with my hubby and he shared his yummy sandwich with me. I only wish we were from these parts and could come back so they'd remember our names too.

Stopped in for a quick dinner. We were pleasantly greeted at the door and seated quickly. Our waitress Jules was prompt and as nice as could be. She always made sure we had what we needed and just had a very cheerful attitude, seems very rare these days. We both ordered burgers with wing chips and they arrived in a timely manner. Our burgers were good, reminded me of a burger you would make at home vs a "restaurant burger". I ordered the pimento cheese burger and it had lots of gooey pimento cheese on it. Wing chips were tasty, you can specify floppy or crispy which is great because my husband and I differ on our preference there. I left thinking it was a good meal, not the "best meal ever" but full and happy. If you want a different pace from the norm and like home cooked food you should definitely give it a shot. They even have homemade ice cream and gooey cake.

I tried this restaurant a few months ago based on good reviews. At that time I determined it wasn't deserving of a single star. I agreed to a second visit as this was my son's selection for his birthday, also chosen due to good reviews. I reasoned that perhaps I had a single bad experience. I selected the daily advertised special of meat loaf, corn and string beans. After a thirty minute wait, I was served a hamburger patty covered with catsup on top of rice. This is not an exaggeration; It was a fried hamburger patty, labeled as meat loaf. The beans and corn were simply reheated from a can with no seasoning. Sixty dollars for four people for reheated canned vegetables and hamburger patties, a costly lesson in relying on reviews.

The staff here is just wonderful. The food is plentiful and delicious. When my 11 yo son walked in he kept staring at the ice cream looking for the red velvet. Unfortunately for him there was none left. The owner decided to go into the kitchen and made him some red velvet ice cream from scratch. The smile on my little boys face was priceless. You can't beat that kind of hospitality.

I enjoyed everything about my visit here. Service was top notch. Atmosphere was relaxed, mellow, and clean. Food was remarkably good. Everything I ordered (nachos, burger, BLT) was fresh and full of flavor. I regret I had no room left for dessert. But I fully intend to return many more times. Recommended for all those who like diners, fresh foods, and happy eating experiences.

This little house turned restaurant is a short walk from our house and I LOVE it! From the moment we realized this location was turning into a restaurant, we were intrigued and couldn't wait for opening. Well we have not been disappointed and I get together with a small group of friends for lunch as often as we can. My youngest son favors the burgers but the salads are my very favorite. They are always fresh, more than you can eat and just loaded with meats and cheeses. Another favorite are the homemade ice creams and the Paula Dean Gooey Cakes - all flavors. If you are looking for relaxation, comfort and good food, then this is the place to go. It is like dinning with friends and the staff is very friendly and service is excellent. I also love the coupons - be sure to sign up for them. Many times on weekends they have live music and entertainment out back. Can't say enough good things about this little gem hidden away in our neighborhood!

First off you are greeted by a tabby cat that is always on the front porch waiting for attention from every passerby but on her terms of course. You walk in to a small house turned into a small but quaint restaurant. Seating is limited to about 20-30 tables inside but there is a covered area in the back that is used for live music mostly on the weekends I believe. I haven't had a bad meal here, the staff is very friendly and on the ball. If you finish something they are fast to clear the unused articles from the table. They have nightly specials on a board by the front door. Tonight they had shrimp and grits. I changed my order when I seen this. I met my family/friends there and was late from work so I had them order for me but was in just enough time to switch to the shrimp and grits. I try shrimp and grits everywhere I can and this is top 3( the other 2 are in Charleston if that gives you a clue as to how good it was!). We also tried the german chocolate gooey cake and it was so awesome we ordered a whole one to take home. The homemade ice cream is awesome too!! They change the flavors all the time. The owner told me they were fixing to put pumpkin spice mousse/gooey cake/ice cream on the menu for the holidays. I told her to get ready to see a lot of me!! (My presence and belly)

This is a great little place. I ate here a number of times while traveling in SC for business. It's a little hard to find and would not of known about it had some colleagues not lived near by. The seating is very limited. It's a house turned into a restaurant and has less than 20 tables for seating. The menu is typical hometown fresh food. Everything I tried had great flavor and good portions. They are known for their homemade ice cream which is delicious! If your in town, be sure to stop in and try this place.

I was in Columbia for business and I had a Groupon coupon for the Backyard Cafe. It's very quaint and welcoming. Cheryl was our waitress. She kept our glasses full, which is a plus for me. We had the chicken alfredo and it was absolutely wonderful. The chicken was moist and the Alfredo sauce was done right. I must talk about the homemade ice cream. OMG, the banana pudding flavor is to die for. It's a must to visit.

I had the chicken Alfredo lunch special. It was an average meal, but the price and the service was excellent. I would eat there again.

Well we went to the Backyard Cafe for dinner tonight and I was really excited after reading all the rave reviews. I had the open faced roast beef sandwich with fries, my husband had the roast beef dinner and my step daughter had the spaghetti. I'm sorry to say I was very disappointed. The food was so bland. A little salt and pepper during cooking would have done wonders. The spaghetti tasted like tomato sauce from a can with a little garlic added. I will say that the roast beef was very tender and the fries were cooked just right, they just needed some seasoning. Our server was ok I guess. She did keep our tea glasses filled but when she went to get my step daughter another drink she never came back. We had to ask for our ticket at the register. Maybe it was a bad night or something I don't know. I can't say that we will go back.

We dine at The Backyard Cafe on a regular basis. It is reliably good food! They make great, fresh hamburgers, delicious hamburger steaks, and great entrees including teriyaki salmon, pot roast, and many chicken dishes. This is a nice, family run restaurant. Be sure to save room for the many flavors of homemade ice cream available all the time! It is delightful!

My husband & I live in the area. It was such a breath of fresh air to have a great place to go to eat. Not another fat laden, southern 1 meat 3 canned veg place! (This place makes everything Fresh!) It has a lovely nice, atmosphere. The owners really care about their customers & the community! It shows in their food & the service. The customers just like us have responded. They stay pretty busy- So if it takes a few minutes extra- which it normally doesn't, Just remember it's made from scratch! They have their back deck open as per the seasons allows. They occasionally have music out back. It's nice because the kids can play after dinner in the yard play area while the parents enjoy an adult beverage & music. I love their backyard steak bites-You can get as an appetizer or on a salad. For lunch we love their chicken salad with pecans & grapes.or a Mediterranean Salad, Comes in a huge bowl! I've tried their specials too & have never had a bad meal. They are known for their hamburgers! If you want just enough to satisfy your sweet tooth Be Sure to get some of Pegs Homemade Ice cream! She always has new flavors. Special occasions go for the gooey chocolate chip cake- It comes hot out the oven with a scoop of that homemade ice cream! Yum!
